What is Corrosion how does it present itself on aluminum trailers, boats and aircraft?
Filiform corrosion, often observed on bare aluminum trailers, boats & aircraft, manifests as thread-like or worm-shaped filaments that propagate beneath the metal’s surface oxide layer, typically initiating at exposed edges, scratches, or imperfections where moisture, salts, and contaminants infiltrate. This insidious process begins with localized breakdown of the natural protective aluminum oxide, allowing corrosive agents to tunnel outward in a network of fine, branching paths that lift and blister the surface, leading to aesthetic degradation and potential structural weakening over time. Complementing this, Pitting also known as Moon cratering on bare aluminum Airstream, Clipper, Spartan, Tanker, or any other aluminum trailer, boat or aircraft presents as a form of pitting corrosion that can be a advanced fillform corrosion or independently characterized by the formation of small, circular depressions that mimic the appearance of craters on the lunar surface, often triggered by prolonged exposure to harsh environmental factors such as acidic rain, bird droppings, road salts, uv sun rays, and or industrial pollutants that initiate localized electrochemical attacks on the metal. These pits start as microscopic defects in the aluminum’s protective oxide layer and deepen over time through anodic dissolution, where aluminum ions are released into the surrounding electrolyte, progressively eroding the material and creating voids that can range from superficial blemishes to deeper cavities exceeding several millimeters in depth. As corrosion advances, it inherently thins the metal substrate by removing layers of aluminum through this ongoing dissolution process, reducing structural thickness and compromising the trailer’s overall integrity, which may lead to leaks, weakened panels, or increased susceptibility to fatigue cracking under mechanical stress. In severe cases, particularly on the tops of Airstream, clipper, spartan and flat topped trailers where accumulation of contaminants and UV exposure are most intense due to direct sunlight and lack of natural rinsing from rain on horizontal surfaces, the corrosion can produce a black soot-like effect from the buildup of oxidized aluminum residues, carbonaceous deposits from environmental grime, and entrapped pollutants that darken and stain the pitted areas, further exacerbating aesthetic deterioration and promoting accelerated degradation. At EXQUISITEMAD® , while our polishing and detailing services excel in cleaning, buffing, and applying protective coatings to preserve undamaged aluminum surfaces, we do not repair, perform body work, fix, or restore areas afflicted by corrosion, pitting, dents, chemical stains, metal color tint, scratches, scrapes, sanding marks, moon cratering or advanced corrosion, as these issues necessitate professional metal fabrication or replacement services outside our expertise. Resluts are not typical. all disclamersand faqs can be found here: https://exquisitemad.com/faqs/
EXQUISITEMAD® does not perform any maintenance, repair, body work, restoration, does not fix any corrosion, scratches, oxidation, pitting, or any other structural issues.
